Fatty Liver

What is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver disease occurs when too much fat builds up in the liver cells. While a small amount of fat is normal, excessive fat can cause inflammation, scarring, and liver damage.

Types of Fatty Liver:

  1. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) – Caused by heavy alcohol consumption.
  2. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) – Common in people who don’t drink much alcohol; linked to obesity, diabetes, and poor lifestyle.

Causes of Fatty Liver:

  • Excess alcohol
  • Obesity & unhealthy diet
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol & triglycerides
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Certain medications

Symptoms of Fatty Liver:

  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal discomfort (upper right side)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Enlarged liver
  • In advanced cases: jaundice, swelling in the abdomen and legs

Home Remedies & Lifestyle Changes:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Follow a balanced diet (low sugar, low refined carbs, high fiber, lean proteins)
  • Exercise regularly (walking, yoga, cardio)
  • Avoid alcohol & junk food
  • Stay hydrated
  • Use liver-friendly foods: garlic, green tea, walnuts, turmeric

When to See a Doctor?

If you have persistent fatigue, jaundice, or abdominal swelling, consult a doctor immediately. Early detection helps prevent complications like liver cirrhosis or liver failure.
